Overview
The following types of facilities are licensed by the Office of Long Term Care:
- Nursing Homes
- Intermediate Care Facilities for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities
- Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities
Nursing Homes
Nursing homes provide total care for their residents–meeting needs from social to dietary to medical. They are staffed by licensed nurses and certified nursing assistants. Nursing homes accept a variety of payment methods, such as private pay (which includes insurance), Medicaid, and Medicare. No age requirement applies to nursing home placements.
Intermediate Care Facilities for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities
Intermediate Care Facilities for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ICF/IID) specialize in providing services to developmentally disabled individuals. Arkansas has two types of ICF/IID’s: “large” facilities are those with more than 15 beds, and “small” facilities are those with fewer than 16 beds.
Among the large ICF/IID’s are the Human Development Centers, which are operated by the State of Arkansas through the Division of Developmental Disabilities Services of the Arkansas Department of Human Services.
Four private ICF/IID’s provide placement only for children: Millcreek of Arkansas, Arkansas Pediatric Facility, Brownwood Life Care Center, and Easter Seals Children’s Rehabilitation Center.

Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF)
A PRTF is a separate, standalone entity providing a range of comprehensive services to treat the psychiatric condition of residents under the age of 21, on an inpatient basis under the direction of a physician. The purpose of such comprehensive services is to improve the resident’s condition or prevent further regression so that the services will no longer be needed.
A PRTF is to provide a less medically intensive program of treatment than a psychiatric hospital or a psychiatric unit of a general hospital.
