SNAP Employment and Training

SNAP Employment and Training

The SNAP Employment and Training (E&T) program, administered by the Arkansas Department of Human Services (DHS) Division of County Operations (DCO), has shifted from voluntary to mandatory for some enrollees.

SNAP E&T connects Arkansans with training, education, and support services designed to promote long-term success and independence.

If you or someone you know applies for benefits, renews eligibility, or reports a change, you may be required to participate if you are not working at least 20 hours per week and do not qualify for an exemption. Participation may be required as a condition of receiving SNAP benefits.

About

SNAP E&T provides a variety of services through partnerships with providers across the state, including Arkansas Employment Career Center (AECC), Adult Education, Shorter College, and Arkansas Northeastern College. Beneficiaries can receive support in areas such as adult basic education, GED/HiSET preparation, digital literacy, workforce readiness, and more.

Beneficiaries who apply for benefits, renew eligibility, or report a change and who are not working at least 20 hours per week and do not qualify for an exemption, are now required to participate in SNAP E&T as a condition of receiving benefits.

Some beneficiaries may be exempt from participation, including those who are 17 or younger, age 60 or older, who are pregnant, living with a disability, caring for a child under age 14 in the household, or those who identify as an Indian, Urban Indian, or California Indian.

As part of the SNAP application and renewal process, beneficiaries are required to complete an interview with DHS staff. During this interview, staff will determine whether participation in SNAP E&T is required and will refer beneficiaries to a provider that best fits their needs. Providers work directly with beneficiaries to create personalized plans and offer training and support services.

Beneficiaries may also receive additional assistance to help remove barriers to success, including support for transportation, books, and other program-related expenses.
