LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Arkansas Department of Human Services (DHS) today is filing a complaint to place two Skyline Health facilities in receivership in Prairie and Howard Counties to ensure the health and safety of the residents. The legal action comes after DHS was made aware of concerns over the financial stability at these two particular facilities.
Office of Long Term Care surveyors have been on site at both locations since Thursday and will remain at the facilities until DHS is assured that operations are continuing, residents are being served, and the facilities are adequately staffed. The two affected facilities are Spring Place Health & Rehab in Hazen and Dierks Health & Rehab in Dierks. Currently, the Hazen facility is serving 39 residents, while the Dierks facility reports an occupancy of 52 residents.
“We know residents and their families rely on these providers for critical services. The health and safety of the residents is our first priority,” said Craig Cloud, Director of the Division of Provider Services & Quality Assurance. “We also know there are many staff at these facilities who want stability and confidence when it comes to their jobs that help them take care of their families. We want to do everything legally possible to make sure everyone’s needs are met.”
The state of Arkansas, through DHS, is filing complaints with local circuit courts to take over the facilities on a temporary basis and is working with an Arkansas-based nursing home owner, who has agreed to temporarily step in and manage the day-to-day operations. If approved by a judge, that means the State will make sure that employees at these facilities will get paid, food will be purchased, medications and treatments will be administered, and the facility will continue to operate and offer the critical services that residents need.
DHS has been closely watching all 21 Skyline-owned facilities in Arkansas since news of the company’s financial issues in Kansas broke several weeks ago. Given the seriousness of what has happened in other states, we will continue to visit and monitor the remaining Skyline facilities to ensure residents’ needs are still being met. The State will take additional action at the other facilities if needed.
