Regional Alcohol and Drug Detoxification (RADD)
The primary goal of the Regional Alcohol and Drug Detoxification (RADD) program is to provide quality detoxification treatment services, while managing limited allotted resources. Meeting the unique needs of Arkansans by insuring proper and timely placement in treatment is the desired outcome of this process.
The RADD manual is intended to be a guide for nurses, clinical staff, program administrators, and individuals that are involved in planning, evaluating, and providing alcohol and/or other detoxification services.
All providers of RADD services will adhere to the Office of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention (ADAP) rules of practice and procedure and the ADAP licensure standards for alcohol and other drug abuse treatment programs.
Questions concerning the RADD program should be directed to the Arkansas Department of Human Services Division of Aging, Adult, and Behavioral Health Services Director of Treatment services or the RADD coordinator at (501) 686-9164.

Regional Detoxification Specialist Certification (RDS)
Regional Detoxification Specialists (RDS) are treatment professionals that have undergone a course of study to safely monitor clients who are in medical or observational detoxification facilities. To monitor clients in detox, you must be one of the following: Physician, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, or RDS (Regional Detoxification Specialist).
RDS Certification includes valid and up-to-date certifications in First Aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Nonviolent Physical Crisis Intervention (NPCI), and RADD (Regional Alcohol Drug and Detoxification) training.
If staff are not licensed medical professionals, or are without the previous trainings and certifications, they are not certified to monitor clients during the detoxification process.
RDS Responsibilities:
- Screening applicants
- Evaluating presenting symptoms
- Compiling an accurate substance abuse history
- Taking vital signs
- Nonviolently diffusing hostile situations
- Providing CPR/First Aid
- Documenting any occurrence relative to the detox process
RDS must recertify every 2 years by retaking the course provided by Division of Aging, Adult, and Behavioral Health Services (DAABHS) and successfully completing the post-test with a score of 80% or better.
All staff should feel comfortable taking vital signs and knowing the implications of those vital signs; evaluating signs and symptoms of withdrawal and implications of those signs and symptoms and be confident in knowledge of emergency procedures as defined in the facility policy and procedure manual.
Emergency Care Plan:
The program will maintain a written emergency care plan that will include the following:
- At least 3 staff members trained as Regional Detoxification Specialists
- The program does provide 24-hour availability of emergency services including adequate provision for handling special and difficult circumstance, when it is determined that an emergency exists
- The program maintains written agreements with ambulance services, doctors, hospitals, etc. to provide medical coverage for emergency situations at all times.
- The program maintains a list of the available services including phone numbers.
RADD Live Class:
Trained RADD instructors are licensed nurses across the state. They are able to provide training outside of their place of employment. Verification of a persons instructor status may be requested via email at [email protected].
RADD ONLINE CLASS BEST PRACTICES:
1. Have participants view the video class (in person to ask questions is best and recommended).
2. Have participants complete BP check off with RN, LPN or approved staff.
3. Proctor the online test (link only shared with trained staff who agree not to share link and to open and close for RADD candidates) with the below instructions and notify OSAMH staff of completion by emailing [email protected]. Staff will grade and notify site lead if the candidates pass or fail.
To obtain certificates:
Submit the completed information (in ONE email) to [email protected] and copy Ms. Karen at [email protected].
You will receive 2 certificates:
- RADD (class completion, does not allow care for clients)
- RDS (approval to care for clients, must have CPR/CPI/BP check off and RADD to obtain).
These will be mailed to the site providing training. Please provide your best mailing address in your email. Please do not send items one at a time in emails, as this can create delays.
Online/Video Class Training:
If you choose to use this online link, all RADD candidates will need to test and check off on hand on blood pressure training. OSAMH staff have link to an online test that can be shared with the testing proctor (supervisor/administrator), and the blood pressure check must be successfully completed. To perform this check off, you must be an RDS, LPN, RN, APRN, PA, MD or DO and provide your state license number on the form.
Regardless of your RADD training option (live vs. live online vs. online/checkoff), you will need to schedule on your own CPR with first aid, as well as Non-Violent Crisis Prevention training (CPI) training for all RDS candidates.
Once RADD, CPR, and CPI are completed, all certificates need to be sent to [email protected]/Ms. Karen Stribling ([email protected]) to create a RDS credential.
HANDS ON BP Check Off:
Documentation of successful completion of hands on blood pressure check off using manual cuff is required to obtain a RDS credential.
If the RADD candidate needs review, here are links to the videos shown in class:
When the person has performed 2 successful completions of blood pressure measurement, complete the blood pressure check off form and submit by email with your full name, license number (or RDS number on your certificate bottom right) and credentials.
