Learn about Adult Family Homes
An Adult Family Home is a single family residence which offers care in a homelike setting. Adult Family Homes are not regulated by the federal government but may be certified by the Arkansas Department of Human Services, Division on Aging and Adult Services (DHS/DAAS). Certification requirements may affect services and levels of care provided by the Adult Family Home. Only homes certified through DHS/DAAS have completed the required multistep process to ensure minimum standards are met.
What is an Adult Family Home?
An Adult Family Home is limited to a maximum of three adults, who are not related to the operator. AFHs may admit adults with physical disabilities, dementia, or other conditions. In the Adult Family Home, care is provided in a manner which encourages maximum independence and enhances the quality of life. The home setting protects and encourages the resident’s dignity, choice and decision making. Care and supervision are provided to maintain a safe and secure setting. Adult Family Home providers and caregivers are required to complete a multisubject training course prior to certification and must take at least 12 hours of training each year.
What should I look for in an Adult Family Home?
The home should be a comfortable environment and you and the providers should be compatible. You should arrange to visit the prospective home and talk with the provider and other residents. In this way, you can determine if the home offers the services and activities that meet your needs.
How do I pay for Adult Family Home services?
Cost will vary depending on the services provided by the Adult Family Home. Consumers may pay for care themselves and some long term care insurance plans may cover services. Adults with limited assets may be eligible for participation in the ARChoices waiver program, a program through the Department of Human Services, which pays for the care provided in the Adult Family Home.
